What's New On 15-16th of February, The Centre for Independent Living (CIL) Sofia is organising an international workshop presenting European practices where international guests from eight countries in the European network (Sweden, Latvia, Poland, Spain, Greece, Finland, Ireland and Germany) and Bulgarian government officials will meet in Sofia to discuss different practices of accommodating disabled trainees/interns in the EU countries and institutions. The purpose is to share experience and motivate the Bulgarian government agencies to set up and offer traineeships and internships to qualified disabled applicants and to work towards making these opportunities also inclusive for youth with disabilities. The network members will be encouraged to share suggestions, technical and organizational expertise, and examples of good and bad practices. Member from the TVE project group will present the project and its outcomes. CIL Carmichael House look forward to participating fully at this conference, in particular by informing on best practice on provision of PA Services, Independent Living, and the experience of CILs throughout Ireland in striving to achieve full and equal participation of people with disabilities within mainstream Irish Society. Any comments you have to offer are very welcome. A full update on the Conference, and the experience of our CIL neighbours will be posted on the CIL website www.dublincil.org IL Case Study: ''Extending the boundaries: Our experience of Independent Living” In 2005 CIL Dublin embarked on some Independent Living (IL) research, supported by a grant from the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. The research, prepared as a collaboration between Ralaheen Research & Design Ltd, and CIL Dublin, comprised of a number of case studies based on experiences of CIL members around a number of themes including Transport, Housing, PA/Leader relationship, Gender and Assistive Technology, among others. The final research report entitled ''Extending the boundaries: Our experience of Independent Living” was launched in the NDA on February 22 last. It is hoped that this well-edited report will be of value to policy making - especially in the period following the enactment of the Disability Bill, 2005. It is accepted throughout the European Union that at any one time 15-20% of the population will have a significant level of disability of a temporary or permanent nature. Limerick County Council selected Newcastle West as a pilot town for the introduction of measures to improve access for people with a disability. Limerick County Council setup a working group (Access 4 All) to develop and monitor progress, in 2005 the Access 4 All group initiated the following awareness projects in the town of Newcastle West. For information on these projects click on the Report on Access Awareness Initiatives in the Town of Newcastle West. New Developments in Independent Living in IrelandWhile each Irish Centre for Independent Living (CIL) has its own independence and identity, it also benefits from being part of a larger movement. The CIL Network allows space for decision makers and consumers within CILs to come together outside of project work, sharing knowledge/expertise and discussing general concerns and direction. The CIL Network meets four times a year and many issues emerge from these meetings - among them most recently the National Advisory Group and the National Leader Forum. The need for a National Leader Forum (NLF) has long been identified by CILs as vital to providing sustained leader support and peer advocacy, independent of any one organisation or service provider. The NLF is also about ensuring that service-users, Leaders, are actively involved in the management of PA services. Currently a NLF report is being finalised which reflects the views of leaders nationwide on the form that such a forum must take in order to best serve leaders' needs. Irish Photo Shop
